Most of the natural UV light people encounter comes from the sun. Of the solar UV energy that reaches the equator, 95 percent is UVA and 5 percent is UVB. UVA and UVB is the strongest and most damaging to living things. Artificial sources, which produce UV radiation, include tanning booths, black lights, curing lamps, germicidal lamps, mercury vapor lamps, halogen lights, high-intensity discharge lamps, fluorescent and incandescent sources, and some types of lasers.

Continued exposure to UV radiation can overwhelm the body's defenses. UV rays can also damage the DNA in the body's cells. User can use the meter to determine UV light intensity and avoid the harmful effects of overexposure.
